Oak is the king of hardwoods and like every good monarch it is firm but gentle. It can stand up bravely to beef, game, and lamb. It is also gentle enough to use to smoke cheese, chicken, and fish. Most experienced BBQ cooks will use oak regularly - it burns cleanly and with a nice even heat. It should be in your wood store.
